![]() CEO Richard Fairbank announced moves to use Capital One's experience with collecting consumer data to offer loans, insurance, and phone service. In 1999, Capital One was looking to expand beyond credit cards. In July 1998, Capital One acquired auto financing company Summit Acceptance Corporation. The company was listed in the Standard & Poor's 500, and its stock price hit the $100 mark for the first time in 1998. An article appearing in Chief Executive in 1997 noted that the company held $12.6 billion in credit card receivables and served more than nine million customers. This gave the company access to a large international market for its credit cards. In 1996, Capital One expanded its business operations to the United Kingdom and Canada. This meant that the company could now retain and lend out deposits on secured cards and even issue automobile installment loans. In mid-1996, Capital One received approval from the federal government to set up Capital One FSB. The company came up with co-branded, secured, and joint account credit cards. At the time, it was losing customers to competitors who offered higher ceilings on loan balances and no-annual-fee accounts. In 1996, Capital One moved from relying on teaser rates to generate new clients to adopting more innovative techniques that would attract more customers to their business model. Expansion into auto loans (1996–present) Capital One attributed its relative success as a monoline to its use of data collection to build demographic profiles, allowing it to target personalized offers of credit directly to consumers. This strategy is risky in that it can lead to losses during bad times. Signet renamed the subsidiary Capital One in October 1994, and the spin-off was completed in February 1995.Īt that time, Capital One was a monoline bank, meaning that all of its revenue came from a single product, in this case, credit cards. On July 21, 1994, Richmond, Virginia-based Signet Financial Corp (now part of Wells Fargo) announced the corporate spin-off of its credit card division, OakStone Financial, naming Richard Fairbank as CEO. History Monoline credit card company (1994–2004) ![]() In the fourth quarter of 2018, 75% of the company's revenues were from credit cards, 14% were from consumer banking, and 11% were from commercial banking. The company's three divisions are credit cards, consumer banking and commercial banking. With a market share of 5%, Capital One is also the second largest auto finance company in the United States, following Ally Financial, formerly known as GMAC. In 2016, it was the 5th largest credit card issuer by purchase volume, after American Express, JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Citigroup. The company helped pioneer the mass marketing of credit cards in the 1990s. It is ranked 99th on the Fortune 500, 15th on Fortune's 100 Best Companies to Work For list, and conducts business in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom. ![]() The bank has 755 branches including 30 café style locations and 2,000 ATMs. It is on the list of largest banks in the United States and has developed a reputation for being a technology-focused bank. The body is remarkably good at recycling. Children don't need as much protein as you might think. Here are three things about protein that many parents don't know:ġ. Our bodies are very good at recycling and reusing proteins as they break down, but we do need to get some from our diet. When we think of protein we think of muscles, but protein is a building block for many other parts of the body, such as hair, bones, enzymes, skin and blood. Why protein is an important part of your child's diet: And for those of you already in the habit, there is hope. But here's the thing: you don't need to start that habit. And for many families it can seem like once you've started the I'm not sure what it is about them that makes kids almost universally like them perhaps it's the same thing that makes French fries universally appealing. It's a power struggle that often plays out asĮnter the chicken nugget. But as they grow into toddlers and preschoolers and we expand their diets, that's where the worry sets in-because the age when they are expanding their diets is also the same age when they become more independent and willful. When babies are small it's not really an issue, because they are onįormula. "All he will eat is chicken nuggets" is something I commonly hear. And very often I find that when it comes to giving their children protein, families feel frustrated-and worried. When all your child will eat is chicken nuggets:Īs a pediatrician, I talk with parents all the time about what their children eat. Here are some things about protein that you may not know-and some ideas to make mealtimes easier. ![]() You can go with traditional bread crumbs for a finer crust or try panko bread crumbs for something a bit of a lighter and crunchier exterior. All parents want their children to have healthy diets-and part of that is getting enough protein. Prepackaged bread crumbs are also fine, and this is where you have even more options. Optimally, you can make bread crumbs at home from leftover bread which allows you to control any additives. There are a number of options when it comes to breading your chicken nuggets. Not only do these hold up well at high temperatures, but they will also impart very little flavor to your chicken nuggets, which really lets the taste of the chicken shine. Good options for this include vegetable oil or canola oil. When you are deep frying in your home kitchen, you want to choose a neutral-tasting oil with a high smoke point. The options are endless! What Oil Is Best? The point here is that once you have mastered the technique of making juicy and crispy chicken nuggets you can put your own spin on it to flavor them. Try using Italian seasoning or adding some lemon zest with dried thyme and oregano. You can take this recipe in a different direction by switching those spices up a bit. At home, we love the combination of garlic powder, garam masala, and paprika/ chilli powder for a burst of flavors. This is the part that gets a little more creative. By cutting them into uniform pieces, you will be able to cook them rather uniformly. Chicken breasts will give you the best texture and flavor. ![]() When making chicken nuggets at home you want to select the best chicken. ![]() If you have never tried this method before, you will be pleased with the results. A simple, hands-off step that involves soaking your chicken with buttermilk will yield fantastic results. Your guests will marvel at how tender they are! That is due to the acidity of the buttermilk which actually traps moisture within the chicken and imparts a delicious flavor.īrining your chicken does require a small bit of prior preparation. In this technique, we will use a unique buttermilk brine to make sure that your chicken nuggets are never dry. This is a key to making thoroughly and well-seasoned chicken nuggets that are super juicy. With this technique and recipe, you can feel confident about serving really tasty chicken nuggets that your family will love. But nothing beats the brined crispy chicken nuggets! This extra step is worth the effort! If you are in a rush to make them quickly you may skip this step. However if you want to make super addictive, extremely juicy and tender chicken nuggets then you have to try out with the extra step of brining the chicken. Egg is the main ingredient here as it locks the juices in the chicken and keeps them soft even after frying. Lastly breaded with seasoned bread crumbs which are deep fried. The traditional process of making chicken nuggets involves dipping seasoned chicken in flour and then in the beaten egg. ![]() NOTE: If your team is commuting to camp (which means you are receiving instruction only), meals are NOT provided. Please check with your State Director on dorm rules regarding decorating. The Suns currently look like a totally different team than what the world saw in Games 1 and 2. Throwing out unfamiliar combinations in rotations continues to help Phoenix too. It was a huge part of them winning this game.” “You tip your cap, and you say Landry Shamet, he gave them a third scoring option tonight. “We know what KD and Booker can do,” Malone said after Game 4. Has the Suns' bench turned a corner after Game 4 outburst? Shamet led all the reserves in Game 4 with 19 points on 6-for-9 shooting, pouring in 14 points in the fourth quarter alone despite not even playing a single minute in Game 2. The Game 4 emergence of Shamet only compounded matters for Denver’s defense - which was previously laser-focused on shutting down Booker and Durant - by providing Phoenix a No. Over his last two games, the league’s postseason scoring leader drilled 34 of his last 43 shots, earning recognition as the first player in NBA history to notch 30-plus point games on 75% or better shooting in back-to-back outings the playoffs.ĭurant, meanwhile, provides the second piece of a pair of teammates averaging 30 points or more during the playoffs, a feat occurring for the first time since 1962 (Jerry West and Elgin Baylor). Nuggets coach Michael Malone called his team’s defense on Booker “unacceptable” after Game 3, only for the superstar Suns guard to torch Denver again with a 36-point gem in Game 4. After two consecutive losses to a surging Phoenix squad powered by classic performances from Devin Booker and Kevin Durant, a refreshed bench led by Landry Shamet and a speedier offense with Cameron Payne at the controls in place of Chris Paul, Denver finds itself reeling in adjustment mode after initially seizing an early 2-0 lead to start this series. ![]() We’ll see soon enough when the Nuggets and Suns clash again in Game 5 of the West semis on Tuesday ( 10 ET, TNT) at Ball Arena with the series tied 2-2. “How are we gonna respond?” Jeff Green asked repeatedly, almost rhetorically to Aaron Gordon. Note that you can now access some of the GRASS libraries from within QGIS, as well as growing host of plugins, all of which increase the computational power that QGIS can unleash. Great for web mapping applications and making finished cartographic products. QGIS - A less powerful, but very functional GIS with a large user-base.Please see my page on GRASS GIS for more information about archaeology-specifc tools that I’ve developed for GRASS. It works a bit differently than other GIS systems, so it may take some getting used to. This is the GIS I use every day, and I highly recommend that you put in the effort to learn it. Rapid development, excellent community, and some of the most cutting-edge geospatial analysis tools available. I recommend it for doing “heavy lifting” GIS work and scientific geo-spatial analysis. GRASS - In my opinion, GRASS is the most powerful, fully-functional FOSS GIS suite. While these may be good options for you, I’ve chosen not to include them here (with the single exception of PAST - see “Scientific Computing/Statistics” below). There are indeed some good free but closed source tools for some of the categories listed below. Finally, I want to emphasize that this list is for FOSS options only. I like having more than one option for each kind of software, but do not want the list to become too unwieldy. Do note, however, that I want to keep this a curated list in the sense that I’d like to be able to either personally vouch for each piece of software, or at least know that it is a good, widely used, and accepted tool. Please provide examples of how your suggestion could be used in an academic context. Please e-mail me or leave a comment below if you have a piece of FOSS software you think should be on this list or to report broken links. I plan to maintain and update this list over time. Mac users may prefer the main Ubuntu distro, which has a desktop interface that will be more familiar to them, albeit which is also larger and more system-intensive to run. I personally use and recommend Xubuntu, which is very lightweight, and which has a desktop interface that will be comfortable for old school Windows users. Now, anyone can do it! Have a look at for some of the more popular flavors of Linux. ![]() Gone are the days where you needed a degree in Computer Science to install and use Linux. However, since all varieties of Linux are also FOSS projects themselves, I highly recommend that you use a Linux OS. It’s important to remember, however, that many pieces of Windows software will run on Linux under the WINE Windows compatibility layer, and a lot of Linux software can be run inside Windows or Mac in a virtual machine or compatibility layer like MinGW. There are a couple of pieces of nice software that are for one or two platforms only, and these are noted. The great majority of these software tools are available on all three major OS platforms: Linux, MacOS, and MS Windows. Also recommended is an article by Benjamin Ducke, Natives of a connected world: free and open source software in archaeology and our recent article in the Society for American Archaeology’s newsletter: Open Science in Archaeology. Read more about Open Source and the FOSS movement at the websites of the Open Source Initiative and the Free Software Foundation. Not only that, but because the source code is always made available, you, as a scientist, can confirm that the software is actually doing what it purports to do, which is something you cannot do with any closed source software, free or paid-for. This means that you can contribute to fixing bugs, asking for features to be added, beta testing, styling, or coding, and so you can help make the software look and work the way you want it too. Because FOSS projects are really community projects, it means that you can get involved if you want to. They are usually very passionate about their projects and they use the software themselves (often in their “day job”). FOSS software is usually (but not always) developed by a community of programmers who do it because they love it and want to contribute to the greater good. ![]() What is “FOSS,” and what does it stand for? “FOSS” stands for “Free and Open Source Software.” It is important to note that this different from “Software You Don’t Pay For” in an important way: FOSS software is not only “free” in a monetary sense, but it is also “free” in the sense that you or anyone are “free” to use it in any way that you want, with only a very few restrictions (typically only that you credit where you got it from). That work specifically led NBA 2K League organizers to tweak their tryout process for the 2019 season, according to Donohue. A league spokesperson told Polygon last year that the diversity initiative included efforts to figure out how to reach women in the NBA 2K community, such as a survey conducted to understand the barriers to entry for women that exist in gaming. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver said during a predraft press conference in April that the NBA 2K League’s organizers and Oris Stuart, the NBA’s head of diversity and inclusion, were setting up a “task force” to tackle these issues in the esports league. “I mean, I think we view this as another positive step, but several more to come.”ĢK Sports ‘would fully expect’ women to make NBA 2K League in 2019 “I wouldn’t say we’re satisfied,” Brendan Donohue, managing director of the NBA 2K League, told Polygon in a conference call with the media on Monday morning. Winnowing down the list to this point from the approximately 7,000 NBA 2K players who qualified for the league’s combine in December was a multifaceted process, with a stated focus on improving the diversity of NBA 2K League rosters. The draft pool, announced Monday, includes two women among 150 new entrants - a first for the league, whose inaugural draft class last year consisted of 102 men. The second-year player draft for the NBA 2K League, the NBA’s growing esports organization, will feature a list of potential draftees that is more diverse than the first season’s crop in two key characteristics: gender and national origin. |
